Reduction in Water Use Needed
Due to ongoing severe drought conditions, the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District (JVWCD) and its member agencies, including Draper City, have adopted a Level 2 water availability for communities across the region.
This designation means all cities supplied by JVWCD must work together to achieve a 10% reduction in water use to help protect our shared water supply and prevent reservoir levels from dropping too low.
What Residents Can Do
To help meet this goal, the following guidance is now in place:
- Do not water until May 15 – We are still experiencing periods of rain. Let nature do the work.
- Watering after May 15 – Please check the Utah Division of Water Resources’ Weekly Lawn Watering Guide for customized recommendations for your area and lawn type.
- Stop watering in September–October - As temperatures drop, outdoor watering is no longer necessary.
These simple changes, when adopted across the community, can make a significant impact.
Why It Matters
Water is one of our most valuable resources, especially in a dry year like this. By making small adjustments now, we can help ensure there is enough water for homes, businesses, firefighting, and future needs.
Long-Term Solutions
For residents who are tired of maintaining high-water-use lawns, Draper City’s partnership with Utah Water Savers offers a landscape incentive program, subject to funding availability, to help you make changes that use less water and save money.
Through the landscape incentive program, residents can receive up to $3 per square foot of lawn they replace with water-efficient landscaping. Landscaping project options include park strip, side yard, and full yard conversions. Draper residents are also eligible for a $1 per square foot incentive for switching to drip irrigation, and a $50 per tree incentive for adding trees. Additional incentives are available for new construction. Get information about eligibility for all incentives at utahwatersavers.com and click on Draper from the list of eligible cities.
Replacing portions of turf grass with water-wise landscaping can significantly reduce outdoor water use, while also lowering maintenance and utility costs.
Rebates
The Utah Water Savers program offers the following rebates:
Smart Controller - Get paid up to $100 when you purchase and install a WaterSense-labeled smart controller that adjusts the water applied to your yard based on local weather and yard conditions.
Toilet Replacement - Receive up to $150 by replacing your old toilet with a WaterSense-labeled one. Any toilet manufactured before 1994 may qualify. You may submit up to 2 toilets per application.
Draper City’s Conservation Efforts
Draper City is doing its part to conserve. Our parks department will not start irrigation until May 15. Residents may notice more brown areas than normal in our parks and park strips until then.
In 2023, the City implemented new water conservation standards for development, reducing turf requirements and requiring water-efficient irrigation for commercial, mixed-use, and multi-family projects. The City also added smart controllers and other water-efficient systems for our irrigation processes.
City code requires commercial properties to avoid watering outside of the hours of 6:00 PM to 10:00 AM. There are currently no restricted hours for residential watering, but that is always something that can be considered if warranted. Generally, it is a good practice for everyone to avoid watering during the warmest hours of the day and on windy days.
The City will continue sharing updates about conservation impacts to the water supply and education throughout the warm weather months.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed and adjust their watering habits throughout the season.
