Fireworks Update - Pioneer Day Holiday Discharge Period

Draper City has applied to the Utah State Forester for permission to continue a ban on discharge of personal fireworks for the Pioneer Day period (July 22-25) as outlined below. This page will be updated to reflect approval status once the City receives a response from the Forester (expected by July 22). 

Tentative Plan for Pioneer Day:

Draper City will renew the citywide ban on the discharge of personal fireworks during the Pioneer Day period (July 22-25), due to ongoing extreme wildfire danger.

The Utah State Forester issued an order on July 20 allowing cities to determine fireworks restrictions based on environmental conditions within their jurisdictions. The order grants decision-making authority to the fire chief and mayor. Draper City will continue the ban on personal fireworks due to increased dryness in our soil and vegetation. Even with rain in the forecast this week, any precipitation we receive will not reverse the cumulative effects of this summer’s heat, wind, and drought, or change the level of fire risk.

Prohibited fireworks fall within the definition of “Division 1.4G common state-approved explosive(s),” as outlined in Utah State Code 53-7-202 – Fireworks Definitions.

Draper recognizes that with numerous large wildfires burning in Utah, firefighting resources are strained, and we believe a ban is appropriate at this time to protect personnel, lives, and property in our community. There were no fire starts, and there was a substantial decrease in illegal fireworks use during the July 4 holiday discharge period.
