Blaze Little Bluestem

Plant Details

Plant Type: Ornamental Grass
Plant Family: Poaceae
Plant Description: This tall, upright ornamental grass will add colorful interest to the landscape. The slender grass blades start off light blue in spring, darken to gray-green in the summer, and eventually burst with deep reds in the fall. They reds fade into vivid pinks as winter approaches. Summer also brings reddish-brown flowers that sit high above the foliage. They turn into feather, silver-white seed heads that can persist through winter. Grows in clumps up to eighteen inches across. Grows well in many soils including alkaline and clay. Requires little water once established.

Maintenance

Ornamental Grass - Medium (showy non-turf grasses that that go dormant in winter, 3-6' tall): Use hand pruners or hedger to cut and remove 2/3 of the total grass height. Trim edges. For warm season grasses (more common), this is best done in late winter to early spring. For cool season grasses apply the same maintenance practices in the late fall, once the plant is dormant.
